Our Genres - Horror

Horror films are movies that strive to elicit fear, horror and terror responses from viewers. In the plots of such films, themes of the supernatural colliding with our world, are very common. Otherwise the theme can be completely "supernatural" without any trace what so ever of reality. Horror movies usually include a central villain. Early horror are largely based on classic literature of the gothic/ horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Later horror films, in contrast, often drew inspiration from the insecurities of life after World War II,
Films that fit into this Genre:
  • Scary Movie
  • Thirteen Ghosts
  • Number 23
  • Dracula
  • Black Chirstmas
  • Halloween

There are many more Horror films but there are different styles of horror, such as, Comedy, Romantic, Gorry-horror, etc.

Our Genres - Chick Flick

Chick flick is slang for a film designed to appeal to a female target audience. The term was first used in the 1980s a decade during which such chick flicks as Beaches were released. Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship-based (though not necessarily romantic and may not involve men). It is typically not used for high art, feminist subject matter, or romantic comedies intended for a wider audience.

Films that represent this Genre:
  • Legally Blonde
  • Mean Girls
  • John Tucker Must Die
  • Pretty Woman
  • 13 Going on 30
  • Clueless
  • The Holiday
  • Thelma and Louise
  • Save the last dance
  • Honey
Even though these are all classed as 'Chick Flicks', there are different styles; Sad, Comedy, Romantic, Dance and many more.

Initial ideas

We have decided to create an opening sequence for a horror film, which will be two minutes long. We are aiming to produce a film, which will fit into the chick flick genre initially, but then turn it into a horror. We want to start it with a party/sleepover, which is being watched by the killer, once someone is alone he/she strikes, then carve a number on their hands according to when they were killed, e.g. the first person he/she killed would have a number 1 carved into their hands and so on. We are looking forward to filming the killing scenes and working together as a team.
